A Rwanda gorilla permit costs USD 1,500 per person, covering one trek and a strictly timed hour with a habituated family. Only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day, so the number of permits released daily is small and fixed. Once a permit is issued in your name it is non-refundable, and date changes sit entirely at the park's discretion. For June to September and December to February we ask clients to commit six to nine months ahead. Uganda permits cost USD 800, which is why some itineraries trek in Bwindi instead.
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, give firmer trails, clearer views of the Virunga volcanoes and more reliable road conditions in Akagera and Nyungwe. Trekking runs all year, since these are rainforests and rain falls in every month. March to May and October to November bring heavier rain and deeper mud, along with greener forest, fewer people at the briefing point and lower lodge rates. If budget matters more to you than dry boots, the wetter months are genuinely worth looking at.
Three days is the working minimum for a gorilla add-on: arrive in Kigali, drive to Musanze, trek the following morning and return. That suits travellers already committed to Kenya or Tanzania. Six to eight days allows a proper Rwanda circuit covering gorillas, chimpanzee tracking and the canopy walk in Nyungwe, plus Big Five game drives in Akagera. Ten days or more works for cross-border trips adding Uganda or northern Tanzania. Anything under three days leaves no buffer if a flight slips or a trek runs long.
Our quoted price normally covers park permits and entry fees, accommodation on the stated board basis, a private 4x4 with driver guide and fuel, drinking water, all listed activities, airport transfers and government taxes. It excludes international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips for guides, porters and lodge staff, drinks outside the board basis, laundry and personal spending. Extras such as helicopter transfers, single rooms and a sedan chair on the trek are priced separately. Every itinerary we send sets out inclusions and exclusions line by line, so query anything that reads ambiguously.
A private departure runs on your dates in your own vehicle with your own guide, so you set departure times, linger where you want and change the plan mid-trip. It costs more per person, especially for two travellers, because vehicle and guide costs are not shared. Scheduled group departures fix the dates and route, cap numbers at roughly six to twelve people, and bring the per-person price down. Groups suit solo travellers who want company and a firm budget. Honeymooners and families with young children almost always do better privately.
Permits are the largest fixed cost and cannot be discounted, at USD 1,500 per person in Rwanda and USD 800 in Uganda. Lodge tier moves the total most after that, ranging from roughly USD 120 per night for a simple guesthouse to above USD 1,500 at the top lodges near Volcanoes. Vehicle and guide costs are charged per day and split across the group, so two travellers pay far more per head than six. Peak season rates, single supplements and internal flights such as Kigali to Kamembe account for the rest.
The minimum age for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking is 15 in both Rwanda and Uganda, and rangers check passports at the morning briefing. There is no discretion on this point. Younger children can still travel with you: Akagera game drives, boat trips on Lake Ihema, the Musanze caves, Lake Kivu beaches and community visits around Musanze all take them comfortably. We commonly plan a split day so parents trek on alternate mornings while the other stays at the lodge. Several lodges offer family rooms and childminding if arranged in advance.
Treks in Volcanoes National Park start between 2,500 and 3,000 metres, so altitude counts as much as distance. Walking time runs from about one hour to six or more each way, over steep, muddy ground through bamboo and stinging nettles. If you can manage two or three hours of uphill walking at home, you will cope. Rangers assign families partly by fitness, so answer the briefing questions honestly. We book a porter for every client at about USD 20, and a sedan chair carried by porters can be arranged in advance from roughly USD 400.
Buy a policy the day you pay your deposit, not the week before you fly. Permits are non-refundable once issued, so if illness, a visa refusal or a missed connection stops you trekking, insurance is the only route to recovering that USD 1,500. Check the policy covers trekking above 3,000 metres, since standard cover sometimes excludes altitude, and confirm it includes medical evacuation. Kigali has capable hospitals, but you may be four to six hours away when a problem arises in Volcanoes or Nyungwe. Cancellation, medical and repatriation cover are the three clauses that matter.

Once you confirm, a 30 percent deposit secures permits and lodge space, with the balance due 60 days before arrival; bookings made inside 60 days are payable in full. We buy permits as soon as the deposit clears and send you the permit numbers. Payment is by bank transfer or card, and a pre-departure pack follows final payment.
